3SI hosted ESTELAR’s Plenary meeting in Athens

The ESTELAR project recently marked its first year of activities with a consortium meeting where partners reviewed progress and aligned the next steps towards the Digital Substation of the Future. Discussions focused on key technical developments and preparations for upcoming pilot activities.
The ESTELAR project recently marked its first year of activities with a consortium meeting that brought partners together to review progress and align on the next steps towards developing the Digital Substation of the Future. The meeting provided an opportunity to assess ongoing technical work, discuss pilot preparations, and coordinate upcoming project deliverables.
Technical Deep Dives and Pilot Preparations
The two-day assembly, held at 3SI’s headquarters, focused on aligning technical workflows and reviewing progress across the project’s core pillars:
- Virtualization & Computational Frameworks: Partners from CIRCE and SOC-E detailed advances in the project’s technical work streams, focusing on operational communications and the edge-to-cloud computational framework required for real-time grid management.
- Pilot Status & Equipment Deployment: A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the progress of the two primary validation sites:
- CIRCE Virtual Laboratory: Discussion centered on the deployment of hardware and configuration to host virtualized protection and control technologies.
- TU Delft (TUD) Digital Substation: The team reviewed the status of equipment installation and the specific virtualization scenarios to be tested in The Netherlands.
- Strategic Alignment: Parallel breakout sessions between partners like Siemens, Stedin, and Cuerva ensured that the modular architecture of the digital substation remains interoperable across different utility and industry standards.
The meeting concluded with a clear roadmap for the next phase of the project, as partners prepare to move from design and setup towards the testing of the virtualized components of the Digital Substation of the Future.
The productive sessions were complemented by a consortium dinner in the historic Psiri district of Athens, offering partners the opportunity to continue discussions in a more informal setting and celebrate the progress achieved during the project’s first year.
